Jujutsu & the Makiwara

FRIDAY KNIGHT NEWS

I am delighted with my new striking post which has very little give to it. It is the first time I have used the top striking style post. Makiwara translated is rice straw (wara) that is bound or tied together (maki). It is basically the kempo and karate version of a kung fu wooden man. The makiwara is used primarily for striking, but there are many different types of makiwara. There are in kempo single arm makiwara, vertically hanging makiwara (like a punching bag), horizontally hanging makiwara (like a horizontal hanging punching bag), the standard standing post makiwara, the 45° angle top striking post and round standing post makiwara which normally used for blocking training.

Most of the old school sensei considered makiwara training an essential tool for developing strong punches, kicks, strikes, and blocking skills. Still it is used primary for striking. A basic makiwara is a tapered 2x4, which in height reaches to the solar plexus. A single arm post generally is the same height of the practitioner. A good makiwara must have some give to it; much like in iron palm training. We do not want the inertia shock reversing back into our bodies. I was always taught it is good to have both a soft and hard maikwara. That is why I trained with a 4 x 4 post and the iron palm bag, both of which are used in kempo. I have also found a few other jujutsu schools that utilize some form of the striking poster or another besides myself.

Some people feel that makiwara training, damages your hands, but I feel that is just from improper training. I started hitting the makiwara in my late teens and I have not had any ill effects from this and I’m now in my mid-fifties. Others feel that they suffer a lack of mobility with a moving opponent from this training. Again, I feel this is from a lack of understanding of the principles of kempo and jujutsu. They are trying to apply a boxing mindset to an unrelated skill set. I had gone through the same thinking many decades ago but eventually gave up the bag training even though it is far superior with cardiovascular fitness. The striking post is about learning preparatory angles and body shifting. Post training might not be the best method for utilizing with sporting rules and limitations, but it has served me well in the street.

My stories are about martial arts adventures that are intertwined with paranormal or supernatural events. The following links are to the Kindle version books from the "Dream Walker” series. Their challenge is to unite their mind and body skills together utilizing what they have learned in the martial arts with the transcendental power of dream mediation. They attempt to do this while they are trying to make a life for themselves and elude those that seek to use and control them.
