What I'm thankful for beyond life, family and friends is having value and purpose. The true test of a man or a woman in my view is that they are able to help make life better for others beyond themselves. To me the martial arts are a tangible representation of this meaning of life. With martial arts I find that it gives an over all system of exercise and fitness that can be geared to any age of ability with some practice. It also helps provide a measure of security both physical and mental beyond the conditioning benefit. Martial arts must be able to provide all these elements to bring balance and not just be combat orientated to be actual martial arts.
Martial arts are to teach us how to live and deal with conflict and provide healing. Learning the art of resolving conflict is the highest expression of martial art training. Killing is easy it's living with the consequences that are hard. A warrior is above a solider; soldiers fight who, when and where they are told to fight. A warrior controls the timing and but the enemy chooses the conflict as a warrior is free of conflict when he defends himself. This is not about military or police action but it speaks to all of the personal button issues that we have to deal with daily. It is not about style or history or tradition of your style although these elements are helpful in creating the feeling for some of us. I happen to be one of the people that falls into this category. I am not a fan of ornate ritual but I do like a semblance of acknowledgement to the traditions of the past I get from wearing a gi.
This uniform represents knowledge, toil and sacrifice. It is a symbol of tradition, humility and honor. It reminds me of the countless others who chose to wear this uniform; from past times and my past. The quiet heroes who protect us that also donned this uniform. The obi that represents a distance crossed, from stiff and bright to worn and faded. Knowledge passed from one to another. A layered embraces that reflects my art. a symbol of sacrifice and another daily step toward self conquest. I am thankful for all this and more.
My stories are about martial arts adventures that are intertwined with paranormal or supernatural events. The following links are to the Kindle version books from the "Dream Walker” series. Our adventurers find themselves on a quest where they are confronted with both conspiracy and mystery. Their challenge is to unite their mind and body skills together utilizing what they have learned in the martial arts with the transcendental power of dream mediation. They attempt to do this while they are trying to make a life for themselves and elude those that seek to use and control them.
