Happy Birthday Patricia July 16th 2016

On the advent of my wife’s birthday I began to consider the major events of her life thus far. She was born in Hahn, (a US Air-force base that was permanently closed after her birth, I'm sure the two events were not related).  This happened sometime between the end of the last great Ice Age and the fall of the Berlin wall. The base was located just outside of Lautzenhausen, Germany and the tiny village of Hahn in the Rhein Hunsrück district of Rhineland Palatinate in west central Germany. Being an Air Force brat it wasn’t long (almost 3 years), before she returned stateside and she spent her formative years growing up in Northern California, Oregon and Alaska. She went to state for the hundred yard dash and she loved to skate when she lived in Alaska, she also played piano, took ballet and gymnastics and graduated high school before she headed east to Ohio.

Once there she met a 6 foot one and a half inch tall blond haired martial artist, and taking leave of her senses she married him. In between nursing him back to health over the course of years and a string of injuries she raised a family, graduated college (summa cum laude). She had made the all Ohio academic team, and received an outstanding achievements award from the Ohio Senate. She home schooled both of her children and they both (son and daughter), graduated college summa cum laude as well. On top of this she was invited to join Harvard University even without submitting an application. She was also part of the original human genome study. At one time she was voted as the woman of the year by our local county government, (a real award not just an honorary photo opportunity type of event).

Sure she has had heartache and hurts, disappointments and pain like all who walk the earth. The loss of both friends and family, the early loss of a brother and a sister. Bearing pain is even harder at times when the pain is that of children, whether it is the pain your children suffer (over disease or the loss of their friends), or the suffering of your friends that have lost children. She has borne the sacrifice of the loss of time from those she loved to help others without complaint, helping and visiting the injured or elderly. Yet it did not seem to matter if her spouse being called away and she was left wondering if he would return when she gave up her time with him.

It was not unusual that he was by called away by phone calls by the local police department or neighbors at all hours of the night or even wake her with frantic pounding on the door as they needed help to stop a burglar, a drug crazed attacker, suicide attempt, fire, or medical emergency in their home. At other times she answered the phone in the dark when from the State Police called needing help with a man hunt or search and rescue needed help finding someone who was lost or missing. She has worked tirelessly at bike-a-thons, walk-a-thons, and break-a-thons to raise money for research or funding with everything from multiple-sclerosis, cancer, pregnancy centers, youth centers, food banks, homeless shelters, tornado and disaster relief. Oh, and did I mention she puts up with me of her own free will?

She also received certificates for her interest in studies in natural health practices. She also practiced martial arts until an icy step and a hand rail curtailed her training even though she was skilled in ukemi, (falling). She had trained with her husband and in seminars under nationally known martial artists. The two most notable being Tony Annesi and Joe Lewis. In the meantime she has been working in academic libraries and is presently employed at Hanover College.

On top of that she’s been married to me as of July 4, 2016 for thirty-eight years, which is an amazing accomplishment considering that she is just now turning thirty no forty-ish, well close enough. Please join me as I wish my wife Patricia, if I recall her name correctly,  a very Happy Birthday!
