Destruction or Disruption

Training in the martial arts serves us by giving us the ability to choose how we will react in a confrontation. As it is said, only warriors choose pacifism while others are condemned to it. Generally speaking, most martial arts operate on the principle of applying destruction or disruption to achieve a successful outcome in an engagement. In any striking oriented martial art the goal is to develop strikes powerful enough to effect the opponent's ability to retaliate. The first method is done by either striking any weak anatomical areas that are vulnerable to a particular type of blow. The other method is to condition the body to develop it into a natural weapon. Of course, some people or styles try to take a middle ground approach to it.

Usually, grappling related arts use disruption as their main focus of both their striking training and use with kuzushi (disrupting the balance). This applies primarily to balance breaking, but on the other hand some striking arts utilize this approach as well. Either approach is accepted in both branches of training, depending on the style and individual's vision. So, with the proper use of disruptive blows or strikes, we may find that destructive throws can follow. While each method can be effective, there are styles that follow a philosophical bent. These systems have the goal of non-violence as the aim to also protect the attacker. This too is my desire but it is not the way I train. I believe in allowing the violence the attacker seeks to return to them in at least equal measure, they decide the consequences of their actions. If everything is perfect, it's good to give them a little extra to send them on their way. I like the fact that any martial art can do both kuzushi and have ikken hissatsu if needed.

This weekend (January 8, 9, and 10, 2016) my book "Conversations with a Sage" will be offered free as a promotion. It is my belief that it will be free to all reading devices and that you do not need to be a member of any program to get it. I'm asking all my friends and readers to please post this information on your pages or pass it along to other readers. My stories are martial arts adventures that are intertwined with paranormal or supernatural events. The following links are to the Kindle version books from the "Dream Walker” series.
