Weapons Classification

Friday Knight News

"You should not have any special fondness for a particular weapon, or anything else, for that matter." Miyamoto Musashi

For me weapons classification teaches how to categorize ordinary objects and weapons themselves into five different weapon types. The five weapon types that I teach to my students are; blunt, edged, flexibility, projectile, and combination weapons. Each and every object around you can be classified in one or more of these categories. All that is required is the ability to change your perspective to find these weapon types. Any weapon small enough to be thrown can also be considered a projectile weapon this allows for any blunt, edged, or flexible to also become a projectile weapon. If a weapon is able to be categorized in more than one weapon type, it can also be seen as being a combination weapon.

The most common weapon available to anyone living on the planet is the planet itself. The point of view that the planet is a weapon is one that has been long held by practitioners of grappling arts. Although I generally hear it cited most often by practitioners of wrestling, judo, jujitsu, aikido, and aikijujutsu. It basically means the ground is hard and the planet is generally considered to be a blunt object. Although at times it can be sharp when edges or protrusions are present, making it also a edged weapon and a flexible weapon at the same time. Most of the time anything that can be used as a club or truncheon is considered a blunt weapon.

Edged weapons are anything that can be wielded that happens to be either sharp or pointed. Often times items such as a glass bottle can transform from a blunt weapon into an edged weapon. Just because a weapon is able to be listed in one category or another doesn't make the weapon itself practical to use or carry around. Some weapons are unwieldy in our modern society, but they might have been considered very practical several hundred years ago. Longbows, spears, and swords still have practical uses in rural outdoor settings. They also are great at teaching timing, perspective, and mental awareness. But generally speaking smaller and more modern variations and adaptations are more suitable to our society's standards.

Flexible weapons are generally the easiest weapon to conceal or can be found available for adaptation in our modern society. All clothing can be utilized as a flexible weapon especially if it is being applied as a garrote. Belts, shoestrings, neckties, and ropes or chains all can be easily adapted. Since I have already mentioned how adaptable projectile weapons are from each of the above categories, I will only list firearms as the most prominent modern day projectile weapon. Of course, the butt of most firearms also serves very well as a blunt weapon when we are in close proximity to our attacker. This leaves us with a final thought on combination weapons. A combination weapon has been cited as a weapon that has the ability to be utilized in more than one of the above categories. But I would submit that it also can be considered a combination weapon if you are able to wield two such weapons simultaneously. This is even if the first weapon is in a different category from the next weapon.

"Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." George S. Patton

The pen is my favorite weapon to train with as I can wield it longer than the bokken; a weapon that I also train with daily. My stories are about martial arts adventures that are intertwined with paranormal or supernatural events. The following links are to the Kindle version books from the "Dream Walker” series. Our adventurers find themselves on a quest where they are confronted with both conspiracy and mystery. Their challenge is to unite their mind and body skills together utilizing what they have learned in the martial arts with the transcendental power of dream mediation. They attempt to do this while they are trying to make a life for themselves and elude those that seek to use and control them.
