Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. What does that have to do with martial artist? A lot of this depends on your point of view as to why you study the martial arts. I understand many individuals pursue martial arts as a method to have ring superiority, or a desire to have a lifelong individual sporting activity. This might range from performing kata, kumite, randori, tameshiwara, tameshigiri etc.
Other people are drawn to the martial arts for the mind body connection and some study to have a means of self-defense so they don't have to rely on weapons. Then there are martial artist who take the approach of integrating all of the above with the inclusion of modern-day weaponry. You always have a right to self-defense as a God given right of natural law, but under common law if you had the ability to run away without the risk of being injured by the person who is attacking you then you have a duty to that. Acting in self-defense should in my view should make a person immune from being prosecuted if there is a reasonable threat to serious bodily harm or death. If someone is standing there with a knife or a gun can you really turn your back and run away without being in fear that the person is just going shoot you or run you down and stab you.
In my books and novels I always try to approach a martial arts from the approach of integration. I appreciate ancient weaponry as well as modern day personal defense weaponry. While I abhor violence I have seen enough that I realize the avoidance of taking the personal responses the loaded to protect yourself and your loved ones leaves you and them vulnerable. It only stands to reason if it takes twenty minutes for backup to answer law enforcement's call for backup after shots being fired (which I have experienced several times), things would be somewhat dicey for an unarmed civilian. Morally I am inclined to follow the philosophy of using the least amount of force necessary to protect oneself. This however does not preclude me from utilizing the martial arts in such a way that the theoretical killing sword becomes the sword that gives life. I hope this Valentine's Day finds you and all your loved ones safe.
My stories are about martial arts adventures that are intertwined with paranormal or supernatural events. The following links are to the Kindle version books from the "Dream Walker” series. Their challenge is to unite their mind and body skills together utilizing what they have learned in the martial arts with the transcendental power of dream mediation.
