Friday Knight News
It has been said that kiai jutsu is an art of
masters. I have seen men on YouTube trying to convince either themselves or
others about the control of this ability. These men say that with the power of
their kiai they can stop a fight or an attacker. First of all I have seen it succeed in both controlled
situations and also in uncontrolled environments. That is why I am convinced that it can work
but there are many elements that have to be taken in consideration for it to succeed.
Before you cast judgment I think you should consider
the facts and the applications for where and how it was successful. Two of the
most famous successful application of kiaijutsu that I have heard about was
performed by masters of the Japanese martial art of aikido.
In the first story a young man tried to steal
luggage at a train station. It is said that the owner of the luggage was Morihei
Ueshiba the founder of aikido. Morihei Ueshiba was known for his powerful kiai
(shout) that could be heard for a great distance. So imagine the shock and surprise
of a young thief who had just encountered this high volume distorting and
distracting shout. No wonder it was reported that the thief fell to the ground
before he ran away.
Some people put a lot of credence as to the sounds
you should make when performing this art. I have not been convinced of the viability
of this teaching, as I have seen just as much success from other masters that
use different sounds as their base. What seems to be consistent with the successful
application of this skill is the ability to shock and surprise with either high
pitches or through powerful decibels or a combination thereof.
The second story was when an aikido master was able
to subdue a belligerent drunk on a train though his use of kind and considerate
words. This application is representational
of the use of psychology or at least martial art psychology. Either way these
skills are useful to a warrior.
There is also something important about the use of words
both written and spoken words, as they can be used to bind or free us. They can
offer us insight or they can be used to cloud our thinking. I found that words used wisely often allowed
well guarded secrets to ooze through. I spent my life between the covers of
books. They offered a productive respite after I was too tired, sore or injured
to train. Adam Chan had this to say about my book “Enlightenment
Kicking and Screaming” (A Story about the Paradox of Martial Art Training).

For me, one of the most beautiful feeling I felt after
reading this book was the (beginner's mind), the feeling of unlimited
possibilities, the aliveness from feeling the unknown with curious gratefulness
and excitement. I would like to thank the author for giving such a feeling on
the journey. This will be one of those classics that people will learn
something different each time they read it.

Their challenge is to unite their mind and body skills together utilizing what they have learned in the martial arts with the transcendental power of dream mediation.
