Black belt level instruction needs to expand from basic training; it does not matter what the style is many black belts tend to stop practicing basic techniques. They need to continue to keep training with all of the traits of the martial arts to keep them strong both mentally and physically. This means keeping your body in condition and your techniques sharp. By learning to adapt basic to fill the gap, you can do this with the understanding how to utilize one motion cover many situations.
It is a common misconception that once you have achieved a black belt there is nothing more to learn except to polish your techniques with more practice. At black belt level is where your real training begins. First you have to develop a mind that is yielding or else you will not be able adjust to changes in your body or unexpected situations. Black belts who become ridged in their thinking often become fixed at this level and never make further progress. They will say things like, (I only need to punch/kick/grapple because it’s superior). Many of them who fall into this category actual lose ground even though they may improve physically for a period they rapidly decline because they have not embraced the totality of changes that life brings.
Often these black belts find themselves starting over again learning a new style because they have either not received further instruction to see how their art can adapt to the physical changes that happen with age or injury. Many have failed to realize that the complexities and nuances of refined movement is found in every system if you look hard enough for it. It is comparable to a musician who after learning to play the scales on his chosen instrument fails to develop the ability to play cords or the ability to control tonal nuances, pitch, and vibrato. This is true of artist who can replicate a painting of a master but they cannot create a masterpiece of their own. This is why learning the principles of the martial arts are so important. The foundation holds the keys to adaptation if you see how the changes in range, tempo, and energy allows for it. Regardless of their individual needs and differences, all black belts need to practice what they have learned to keep polished. When a black belt student reaches the advanced level, practice becomes even more important because everyone has a different way of perceiving the world around him.
